FAQS

Choosing Artificial Grass

What artificial grass is best?

Artificial grass comes in many qualities, colours and sizes. Generally, quality is measured by the blade length of products and the density (measured in grams per square metre). Colours and styles vary from products that try to imitate a natural looking garden lawn (with all the imperfections that go with it) to lush green 'perfect' turf. Installing Artificial Grass

Is artificial grass easy to install?

Preparation is the key here. If you prepare the ground to the correct guidelines, then it is very simple and quick to lay. The artificial grass has been designed to be easily installed DIY. Some people may ask for the assistance of a landscaper to prepare the groundwork for them.

If you’re at all unsure, then feel free to contact us for further advice, or check out our DIY installation guide which gives you a step by step guide to fitting an artificial lawn on almost any suitable surface.

Can I install artificial grass myself?

Yes. If you’re practically minded, you can install Ultimate Grass yourself. And you only need basic tools. We’ll give you plenty of help and advice including a step-by-step installation guide.

Can artificial grass be laid on concrete?

Yes. Installing artificial grass on concrete is easy as there is already a solid base to lay on. If the installation site is external you should ensure that the concrete has an appropriate runoff for rain and that water does not pool on the surface (pooled water on the turf could damage the backing over a long period). Follow our installation guides for a step by step walkthrough.

Can artificial grass be laid on block paving?

Yes, but the effect will be best if the paving surface is uniform and free of lumps/bumps. You should also ensure that the paving has an appropriate runoff for rain and that water does not pool on the surface (pooled water on the turf could damage the backing over a long period). Follow our installation guides for a step by step walkthrough.

Can artificial grass be laid on soil?

Yes but you need to prepare it first and lay a sub-base. Follow our installation guides for a step by step walkthrough.

Can artificial grass be laid on grass?

We wouldn't recommend laying artificial grass on existing turf. The existing grass should be removed and a sub-base laid before installing artificial grass. Follow our installation guides for a step by step walkthrough.

Do I need an underlay for artificial grass?

You should use underlay for your artificial grass and we recommend using a pad, particularly for the permanent installation of artificial grass on decking, concrete or other hard surfaces. When laying artificial turf on an existing grass profile, it is important to use a geotextile membrane to prevent weed growth.

Can artificial grass be laid on any surface?

Ultimate Grass artificial grass is versatile enough to be laid on just about any surface. It can be laid on soil, concrete, tarmac, paving and areas which have previously had natural grass (with suitable base preparation where required). It copes beautifully with sloping areas. It can even be laid on roof terraces and balconies.

Caring for Artificial Grass

What to clean artificial grass with?

Generally speaking, there are two options available for you.

You can either let nature take its course (let the rain clean it!) or you can simply wash it down with a hosepipe. To keep your lawn looking brand new, we recommend giving it a quick brush once every 6 months. This keeps the pile standing up and looking clean.

Can artificial grass be washed?

Yes, see ‘what to clean artificial grass with’ above. You get your hose out and give the lawn a very quick clean with some plain water straight from the tap to keep it clean and looking good.

Can artificial grass be vacuumed?

Yes, artificial grass can be vacuumed, provided it doesn’t have high suction, it can be considered like a normal carpet, although it’s not that necessary.

Will I need to clean my artificial grass?

Although artificial grass doesn't require cutting like natural grass, your lawn will still need regular care. Rain will clean dust and other dirt from your lawn, but in drier seasons a regular rinse with a hose will be needed. Follow our care guide for a step by step walkthrough.

Will pet waste cause damage?

Pet soiling will not damage the grass, and any staining which may occur can easily be cleaned.

Animal urine will pass straight through the grass and be absorbed by the soil underneath - although we do recommend regularly rinsing the grass with water.

Will artificial grass fade?

No, our artificial grasses are fully UV resistant and carry a minimum guarantee of 9 years against fading from sun exposure, meaning your grass will stay green all year round!

Does artificial grass require maintenance?

No, maintenance is not really required. You may need to remove dead leaves or other debris, which may come from plants or trees from time to time.
